Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division is offering an exciting opportunity to work with world leaders in science, and be a part of a team that will advance science and influence the world. The Construction Manager will manage construction and demolition work performed by outside contractors. You will oversee day-to-day construction activity including assuring safety and permitting compliance, minimizing operational impacts, quality control, and general construction administration. You will maintain a safe work condition on all construction projects. You will also assist the Project Manager in the development of construction scope, schedule and budget as requested.
Typical LBNL construction projects include research laboratories, offices, data centers, as well as infrastructure improvements including civil, telecom, electrical, mechanical, controls projects, remediation and demolition.
You may manage multiple projects or a single large, complex project. You may also be matrixed to the Operations Department to manage maintenance contracts/contractors.
Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. The Lab's mission encompasses many scientific fields, and its buildings include supercomputing facilities, genetic sequencing labs, laser labs, microscope facilities, and office complexes. Thirteen Nobel Prizes have been associated with Berkeley Lab.
Provide oversight and supervise/manage construction activities.
Oversee and direct construction projects from conception to completion with oversight.
Ensure work is performed in a safe manner in compliance with LBNL and DOE health and safety policies and other applicable Federal, State, and local fire, health, safety, and environmental protection policies.
Assure all contractors are properly orientated to LBNL requirements prior to starting work
Participate in evaluation or selection of potential contractors.
Coordinate equipment access/shutdowns, obtain permits, and help develop project schedules to support subcontractor activities and minimize interference with others' work with oversight.
Issue work orders for LBNL craft support of construction work.
Coordinate activities of subcontractors, LBNL in-house Construction Services staff and vendors performing work or supplying materials to the project.
Maintain a daily log of work activities for each active construction project and be able to report out on the project status' weekly.
Assist in the planning and scheduling of tasks that may involve complex preparations for streamlined and safe execution of work with oversight.
Monitor work and coordinate inspections to confirm work is performed in accordance with code, drawings and specifications.
Communicate with multiple stakeholders, including FAMS, EH&S staff, building managers, Fire Marshal, Inspectors, and applicable Authorities Having Jurisdictions (AHJs), keeping them informed of work status and schedule.
Perform "Simple But Needed (SBN)" inspections and entries.
Develop and/or review construction schedules, evaluate construction estimates with oversight.
Review project plans and specifications for constructability, maintainability & cost effectiveness with oversight.
Verify work performed to support contractor progress payment requests.
Ensure "as built" drawings are properly updated throughout the project and turned over to LBNL at project completion.
Interface with LBNL personnel, contractors and/or vendors as necessary to fulfill customer requirements.
Ensure that work controls are in place and that safety requirements are identified.
Manage Work Order Queue in Maximo.
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or Business Management and budget management experience in a multi-project environment; or work experience with maintenance estimating, planning and scheduling in a complex industrial plant or laboratory facility with multiple buildings.
A Level 2 LBNL Job Classification typically requires a minimum of 2 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or advanced degree without experience; or equivalent experience.
A Level 3 LBNL Job Classification typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent experience.

Demonstrated experience as a superintendent or professional construction manager-coordinating remodel and new construction projects of a broadly diverse scope, preferably on highly complex buildings for government or institutional or industrial use.

Working knowledge of the regulations associated with asbestos abatement (EPA & CAL OSHA). Working knowledge of the UBC and Fire Code as related to commercial and industrial buildings. Understanding of biological and chemical hazards. Knowledgeable in the area of construction safety consistent with OSHA, NEC etc. standards.
General understanding of major environmental mandates and regulations such as RCRA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, CERCLA as well as DOE Orders pertinent to environment, health and safety protection.
Ability to plan, organize and estimate multi-craft institutional building renovation/tenant improvement, remediation and demolition projects.
Demonstrated ability to use computers effectively for record keeping, report writing and communication.
Experience applying analytical and problem solving skills to complex problems.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative, use sound judgment and provide solutions to ensure results.
